Business School Team Crowned Champion at the Final of Second IMA Management Accounting Case Competition
On November 26, in the Finals of IMA Management Accounting Case Competition held in Yuyang Hotel in Beijing, the delegation named Dream Chaser from Business School defeated seven delegations from Peking University, Renmin University of China, Shanghai University of Economics and Finance, and claimed the Championship. As a reward, Dream Chaser will be the only team to attend the 92nd IMA annual global conference in Florida in June, 2011. All their expense will be covered by IMA. This is the highest honor SYSU students have obtained in national competition in the field of management accounting.
The team, Dream Chaser, is formed by junior students of Business School. Huang Peilong, Liu Mengning and Peng Weijian are from the Department of Accounting, the team leader Zhang Wei is from the Department of Business Administration. Dream Chaser’s qualification comes after winning first place in both initial school competition of SYSU and semi-finals of South China region. In the finals in Beijing, nine teams were given the case of running a farm ?and they were supposed ?to use management accounting tools to give advice for the farm’s decision making. They must finish the case analysis in 48 hours and give presentation within a week. With guidance from various teachers of our school, Dream Chaser successfully prepared a presentation which was highly recognized by the judges and other contestants for its content and design. What’s more, they presented the analysis decision before the judges and audience with confidence and claimed the champion. The leader of the team is Mr. Zheng Guojian. Together with other teachers, Cai Xiang, Gong Kaisong and Ge Rui, they are responsible to give guidance to the team.
IMA Management Accounting Case Competition is a good opportunity for college students to apply the knowledge they have learned and to show their competence. More than 1600 students from 26 key universities took part in the competition.
IMA is the worldwide association for accountants and financial professionals working in business. The organization was founded in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1919 as the National Association of Cost Accountants (NACA) to promote knowledge and professionalism among cost accountants and foster a wider understanding of the role of cost accounting in management. Its name was later changed to the National Association of Accountants (NAA). In 1991, the organization name was again changed to the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), signifying its broader role as the association for accountants and financial professionals working inside organizations, and now it is known by the shorthand—IMA. It currently represents more than 60,000 accountants and financial professionals in business.
