Abstract:
In addition to economic factors, non-rational influences play a crucial role in firm internationalization. Drawing on upper echelons theory and internationalization studies, this study examines the impact of CEO political ideology on the international business choices of multinational enterprises (MNEs). Specifically, we propose that MNEs led by CEOs with more liberal political ideologies are less likely to engage in manufacturing internationalization, but more likely to pursue R&D internationalization. Using a sample of S&P 1500 firms headquartered in the U.S. from 2001 to 2016, our empirical analysis strongly supports these hypotheses. Moreover, we find that the negative relationship between CEO liberalism and manufacturing internationalization is amplified in less-developed economies, while the positive relationship between CEO liberalism and R&D internationalization is strengthened in host countries with better intellectual property protection. This study contributes to the international business literature by highlighting the significance of non-rational factors in firm internationalization and offering a fresh perspective on internationalization depth. Furthermore, it expands the existing literature on political ideology by investigating its influence on firm internationalization strategies.
